Why This Coffee Is Special

This coffee comes from just 1,200 SL28 trees growing at our family’s 170 acre farm in Apaneca, El Salvador, and the story behind them is one we especially love.

It began back in 2010 with a little curiosity and a coffee mystery. There was a variety growing in El Salvador that people simply called “Kenya,” but no one seemed to know exactly what it was. Together with a good friend and fellow roaster from the UK, we decided to find out.

He sent us genuine SL28 seeds from Kenya, which we first planted in our nursery. At the same time, we were able to get seeds from a friend and coffee producer in El Salvador who had some of these mysterious “Kenya” trees, coffee that had even made it to the El Salvador Cup of Excellence.

We raised both varieties in our nursery and eventually planted them side by side in our Guachipellin Lot, an area of the farm dedicated to experimentation and discovering exceptional coffee varieties, so we could compare them as they grew.

A few years later, we finally had our answer. The two were the same. The mysterious Salvadoran “Kenya” was, in fact, SL28.

Originally selected in Kenya in the 1930s, SL28 has become one of Africa’s most celebrated coffee varieties. It is still incredibly rare to find it growing in El Salvador, which makes these 1,200 trees and the coffee they produce particularly special to our family.

About El Salvador SL28

This is the kind of coffee we save for special occasions like our Advent Calendar or Reserve Collection. It is naturally processed on raised beds at our farm, with every stage carefully monitored and controlled to bring out the best expression of the variety.

Its velvety, delicate body and gentle low to medium acidity make it refined without being overly bright, while its natural sweetness brings beautiful clarity and balance to the cup.

Our SL28 has consistently been one of the standout coffees from Finca Argentina and was our personal favourite lot from the farm in 2024. With only a small number of trees producing it, this is a coffee we are able to share in very limited quantities.
