Advent Calendar Day 23 - Java
COFFEE: Java
NOTES: Baker's Chocolate, Burnt Sugar, Spices
ROAST: Medium
The Surya Abadi Kayumas cooperative, which operates around the village of Kayumas on the island of Java, Indonesia, is an example of organic coffee production on small plots atypical in a region dominated by large government run coffee estates established by the Dutch in the 18th century. This coffee was cultivated by 145 small producers whose average farm size is around 5 acres. Surya Abadi Kayumas provides comprehensive technical support to farmers including guidance that starts with organic farm management practices and extends to valuable assistance in navigating the certification process. Through the cooperative producers also have access to credit and income diversification programs.
Expect a robust full-bodied coffee with low acidity and hints of bitterness. Notes of burnt sugar and baker's chocolate can be found in the cup.
