Too Hot for Hot Coffee? Time to Try Cold Brew

Yay, summer is here, and it’s been hot!

If you're anything like me (a tropical bird at heart 🦜☀️), you're probably soaking up the sunshine, spending more time outside… and looking for ways to cool down without giving up your cup of coffee.

As you may have read before, I might drink a little too much coffee (Guilty! What can I say, it’s just too good!). So the other day, as I was about to brew my usual afternoon cup, I had an “Aha!” moment: it’s officially cold brew season, and this is your sign to give it a try if you haven’t yet! 😄

Cold brew is the ultimate summer coffee hack—mellow, low-acid, naturally sweet, and incredibly easy to make. Once you’ve got a batch in the fridge, all you have to do is grab, pour, and go.

Here’s how to make your own cold brew at home:

What you’ll need:

  • 1 cup coarsely ground coffee (about 85g)

  • 4 cups cold, filtered water

  • A large jar or French press

  • A fine mesh strainer or coffee filter (I prefer using a paper coffee filter for a cleaner cup. It helps remove fine coffee particles and oils, giving you a crisper, smoother taste.)

Steps:

  1. Add the ground coffee to your jar or French press.

  2. Pour in the water and stir gently to saturate all the grounds.

  3. Cover and let it steep in the fridge for 12–18 hours.

  4. Strain it into a clean container.

  5. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days.

  6. Serve over ice, with milk, cold foam, or just as-is. 

Twist It Up:

Vanilla Iced Latte: Pour your cold brew over ice, add a splash of vanilla extract and a dash of cinnamon and top with frothed milk for a creamy treat.

Cold Brew Float: Scoop some vanilla ice cream into your cold brew for a dessert-inspired drink.

You can make cold brew with just about any beans, but here’s what I personally prefer:

1. Colombia Single Origin:
Smooth and balanced with caramel sweetness, chocolate, and subtle berry notes — it’s perfect for cold brew’s mellow, naturally sweet style.

2. MacLeod Blend:
A medium-dark roast with bold, rich flavours. Its chocolate and nutty notes hold up beautifully to ice and milk, making it a great choice if you like creamier cold brew drinks.
