Coffee and dementia risk is a topic that’s been getting a lot of attention lately, and while I was stuck at home with a cold (bored like a latte with no espresso), I stumbled across a fascinating new study featured in The New York Times.

If you’re someone who enjoys a few cups of coffee a day — and maybe jokes about “too much coffee” — you’ll probably find this interesting.

Researchers have been exploring whether daily caffeine habits could influence long-term brain health. And the findings might make your next cup taste even better.

A Large Study on Coffee and Dementia Risk

The article highlights a large, long-running study that analyzed health data from more than 130,000 participants over several decades.

Researchers wanted to understand whether caffeinated beverages were associated with:

  • Dementia risk

  • Cognitive function

  • Long-term brain health outcomes

The results showed a noticeable association between moderate caffeine consumption and reduced dementia risk over time.

2–3 Cups May Be the Sweet Spot

According to the findings:

  • People who drank 2 to 3 cups of caffeinated coffee per day showed the strongest association with lower dementia risk

  • Tea drinkers (1–2 cups daily) also showed a similar pattern

  • Decaffeinated coffee did not show the same link

This suggests caffeine — or the naturally occurring compounds that come with it — may play a meaningful role in supporting cognitive function.

It’s important to note that the study does not prove that coffee prevents dementia. Observational studies show associations, not direct cause and effect.

But the consistency of the data is compelling.
